Peter S. Goodman, the global economics correspondent for The New York Times, will be the keynote speaker at the 2023 Camden Conference, Global Trade and Politics: Managing Turbulence, to be held the weekend of February 17-19 in Camden, Maine.
Over the course of three decades Goodman has reported from more than 40 countries, including stints in conflict zones such as Iraq, Cambodia, Sudan and East Timor and has covered some of the most momentous economic transformations and upheavals – the global financial crisis of 2008 and the Great Recession, Brexit, and the catastrophe of the coronavirus pandemic.
Goodman covered the emergence of China as a global superpower, but in a front-page story in The New York Times on January 1, Goodman reported that some American companies are shifting their manufacturing businesses from China to Mexico as part of a trend known as “near-shoring.”
Before he became the Times‘s New York-based national economics correspondent and then global economics correspondent, Goodman was the Shanghai bureau chief and technology reporter for The Washington Post, covering the dot-com bubble. Goodman has also worked at the Huffington Post and as editor of the International Business Times. He has been recognized with some of journalism’s top honors, including two Gerald Loeb awards, and seven prizes from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. His work as part of The New York Times series on the roots of the 2008 financial crisis was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
He is the author of the best-selling DAVOS MAN: How the Billionaires Devoured the World (HarperCollins, 2022), and PAST DUE: The End of Easy Money and the Renewal of the American Economy (Times Books, 2009), which was named one of Bloomberg’s top 50 business titles.
Charlotte Singleton, chair of the Camden Conference Program Committee, said “We are thrilled that Peter will give the keynote address. He has an exceptional ability to tell the stories of how trade matters everywhere to the lives and opportunities for workers, small businesses, and corporations seeking to access markets and provide jobs and wages.”
The 2023 Camden Conference will be held live at the Camden Opera House and live-streamed to venues in Belfast, Portland, Rockland, and to classrooms and households around the world. David Brancaccio, host and senior editor of American Public Media’s Marketplace Morning Report, will return in the role of conference moderator. The Camden Conference is a nonprofit, non-partisan volunteer-driven citizens’ forum, whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues through year-round public engagement in community events and student education programs, culminating in an annual February weekend conference.
